Last year (2008) there were 300,000,000 (that’s 300 million folks . . you can look it up) tires sold in the United States. Using a conservative average weight per tire of 25 pounds, and calculating the 56% of that total that turns out to be one petro-chemical or another, that’s 4,200,000,000 (that’s right . . . 4 BILLION 200 million) pounds of the carbon producing stuff used making these tires. Stay with me on the math. If you maintain your tires to proper inflation pressures, independent study by groups such as the NTDRA (National Tire Dealers and Retreaders Association) indicate you can save as much as 25% of your tire life. That means . . . if every vehicle in the United States filled their tires with nitrogen instead of compressed air, the potential savings would be 1,050,000,000 pounds of petro-chemicals THE FIRST YEAR. This does not include the petroleum costs to store and deliver these products, which is who knows how much more.
Don’t take my word for it. There is plenty of data available on the web. (Try www.getnitrogen.org). The University of Clemson, the Austrailian government, and the University of Bologna (wow) all present data supporting this claim, and lay waste to Consumer Reports poor results.
